These lab girls were filmed against blue and the background was created with Carrara. Blurring out the background a bit always adds realism, but it's very difficult for most animators to blur out their hard work after working on it for so long. They want to show every detail, but that's what makes it look cg. The person in the background on the elevated walkway is a video texture map with alpha transparency mapped onto a single polygon placed on the 3D walkway.
